Lioco is the result of a years-long conversation between Matt Licklider (a seasoned wine import specialist) and Kevin O'Connor (wine director at Michelin Two-Star Spago, Beverly Hills) about whether California could produce a true "wine of origin," one that favored nuance over sheer power. That was in 2005, and the Lioco enterprise is still going strong, now entirely owned and operated by the winemaking duo of Matt and Sara Licklider. Indica is their red blend, mostly Carignan with a small amount of Valdiguie added in, both sourced from 70-year-old vines from Mendocino County; it has aromas of berries and lavender and a savory concentration of fruit.
