Achaval Ferrer, on of Argentina’s leading wineries, was founded in 1998 by friends with a shared love of wine, a group that included Argentinians Santiago Achaval Manuel Ferrer, an Italian investor, Tizian Siviero, and Italian wine consultant (and the original winemaker) Roberto Cipresso. The winery eventually made its name, and rose to the top of the Argentine wine scene, by getting 99 Parker points for their single vineyard Finca Altamira Malbec in 2011, making it one of the highest scoring wines at the time. From the start, the founders were committed to two sound principles: the search for the highest quality in the wines they produced and respect for the terroir. Today the winery is owned by the Stolichnaya Spirits Group, which acquired a majority share in the winery in 2011. From its first release the Quimera bottling has been the winery’s premier offering, a Bordeaux-styled blend of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, but with Malbec taking the lead. Big, round, and velvety on the palate, the wine features very ripe tannins and a strong mineral finish.
