Founded in the 1970s by Stelios Alexakis, the Alexakis winery is the single most important wine producer on the island of Crete. Stelios’ sons Lazaros and Apostoli are now in charge of day-to-day operations, working with small growers on the island to create small-production bottlings for the international market. The Assyrtiko grape is most commonly associated with the island of Santorini, where it originated, but it is now also being grown with great success in high-elevation vineyards on Crete. This is a charming example of the grape, fresh and elegant, with lots of mineral and citrus notes.
