This small estate has a history that goes back at least to the tenth century, but its winemaking days are of much more recent vintage. Monika and Thomas Bar-Bettschart ─ she a noted gallery owner, he a Swiss lawyer and banker ─ met in Tuscany and fell in love, with Tuscany and with one another. In 1990 they returned to Tuscany, purchased this historic property, and started a winery. The Rubiolo is their entry-level Chianti Classico, a blend of 90% Sangiovese with 10% Merlot. The grapes come from two of the best Tuscan terroirs for the production of Chianti Classico wines, Castellina in Chianti and Panzano in Chianti. Medium-bodied and fruit-forward, the wine bursts with ripe fresh cherries, with a backbone of vanilla, honeysuckle and rosemary.
