Walter Massa, affectionately known as "The Mad Master of Barbera," has been producing wine in the hills around Tortona in the eastern Piedmont since 1978. (He is also known as "Il Maestro di Timorasso" for his efforts in rescuing that grape from near extinction.) Walter works mainly with three varietals, Barbera, Croatina, and Timorasso, and also a little with Nebbiolo and Freisa, but perhaps his greatest efforts have been in msking the case for Barbera as a grape capable of producing serious and long-lived wines. The "Terra Rosso" is his all-cement Barbera, and a great introduction to Massa's red wines; it features a spicy aromatic profile characterized by juicy small red fruits and fresh herbs.
