One of the greatest names in all of Piemonte, Cantine Giacomo Conterno is a classic producer of traditional high quality Barolos. The concept of the winery was formed in 1908 when Giacomo’s father, Giovanni Conterno started a wine bar in the village of San Giuseppe. Giovanni made Barolo from purchased grapes and sold whatever was not needed at the tavern in barrel at this time. The tavern and the winery passed to his son Giacomo, then to Giacomo’s two sons, another Giovanni and Aldo. Aldo Conterno was interested in experimenting with a more modern style of Barolo, and the estate was split between the two brothers in 1969. Giovanni continued making wines as his father and grandfather had done before them, traditional Barolos of uncompromising quality. Today, the torch has been passed to third generation winemaker, Roberto Conterno. Roberto worked side by side with his father for many years before his passing in 2004. The Conternos own the Francia vineyard, one of the top Barolo crus and the source of this Barbera. This Conterno version of Piedmont’s “everyday” wine, with twenty months in oak, is brawny and earth-driven, full of ripe red fruit and bramble flavors, with leathery undertones and a strong mineral presence.
