In 2007 a bright young Italian couple, Antonella Gerosa and Massimo Marchiori, both architects from the Piedmont region, decided to chuck it all: they moved to a quiet little village in Spain, bought an old farmhouse, refurbished it and converted it into a cellar. Next step was the creation of Partida Creus, a small traditional winery that produces a very limited quantity of high-end original wines made with organically grown grapes. Their MUZ is a vermouth-style wine made using a recipe that dates back to 1870. The base is a blend of a young red, and older red, and an oxidative white; to this Massimo adds a mixture of upwards of fifty different botanicals, including citrus skins, flowers, and oriental spices that macerate in the alcohol for two lunar moons. The result is a sensory overload of bitter herbs and bark with a kick from exotic spice, an exciting new aperitif or digestif.
