Casa Mariol is two things: it is one of Barcelona’s finest vermouth bars, and it is also the producer of one of Spain’s tastiest vermouths. The Mariol family has been in the wine business for more than a century, operating out of "La Batea" a medieval town in the heart of Terra Alta region of Catalunya. The current generation, led by Miquel Angel Vaquer and his siblings, has launched a small revolution in packaging and attitude . . . no frills all the way . . . and have won major international awards in the process. Their Vermut Negre is absolutely sui generis: it is made from wild Catalan Macabeo grapes macerated with a blend of up to 150 different ingredients, including green walnuts, rosemary, thyme, orange peel, wormwood and cardamom. It has a unique dark color and taste enhanced by maturation in a solera system.
