The De Forvilles emigrated to Piedmont from Belgium in 1848 and established themselves in the village of Barbaresco in 1860; in 1907 Paolo Anfosso married into the De Forville family and took over the reins of the family business, but it was only in 1940 that they began bottling their own wines. Now the fifth generation is in place, in the persons of Valter and Paolo Anfosso. This Nebbiolo is a special cuvee that originates from vines located in the commune of San Rocco d’Elviom which is perched on a hilltop in between the Barbaresco and Barolo zones. It is considered this wine to be the “Barolo” of the De Forville estate, as its structure more closely resembles that of Barolo than it does Barbaresco: the tannins are more firm, the fruit darker, the wine more somber, and it undergoes a longer fermentation and elevage than does their Langhe Nebbiolo and is released later. Vibrant and linear, it features classic Nebbiolo aromas of rose petals and damp earth and a racy palate with flavors of sour cherry and orange peel and brisk acidity.
