Elio Grasso is a self-declared disciple of Aldo Conterno. He was always an admirer of the Conterno estate. In 1979, when he decided to move from his banking job in Turin to Monforte to transform the 335-acre family farm into a winery, Aldo helped Elio get started by providing advice and winemaking assistance. The Elio Grasso estate is now under the guidance of son Gianluca, a direct and no nonsense man in his prime, and the Grasso wines, especially the arolos, remain benchmarks for the region. This is a beautifully delicate and elegant wine with fruit sourced from 35-year-old vines at 1,000 feet above sea level; it shows bold lines filled tight with black fruit, plum, licorice, tobacco and leather but also offers a beautiful floral note of pressed red roses that lingers long on the finish.
