This beautiful estate in the village of Abbadia di Montepulciano in the hills of southern Tuscany is owned and operated by Simona Ruggeri and her two daughters, Anna and Margharita. The activities of this azienda are predominantly devoted to the production of fruits and vegetables, with only approximately 25 acres of prime hillside land set aside for the cultivation of the finest Tuscan grape varietals. Prior to 1989 the wine was sold off in bulk, but with the 1990 vintage the estate began bottling its own wine. The women have since expanded their vineyard holdings to include a prime parcel of land in the Vino Nobile appellation, and production of the Rosso di Montalcino began in 1999. The Rosso is roughly 90% Sangiovese with a few other grapes making up the balance; it is a medium-bodied juicy red with fresh black cherry flavors supported by subtle spice notes and ripe tannins.
