Produced by Tenuta San Guido in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Sassicaia is considered the seminal Super-Tuscan, as the 1968 vintage was the first Tuscan red made in the image of fine Bordeaux. In the late 1990s Sassicaia was granted its own DOC (Bolgheri), the only wine from a single estate in Italy to enjoy this privilege. The estate was founded on the Tyrrhenian coast in the 1940s by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. An 85/15 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this is a taut, densely wrought red with aromas of exotic spices and French oak; a wine of great intensity and elegance, it has soft polished tannins and a long creamy finish.
