The Fröhlich family has been cultivating vines since the 19th-century, but the Schäfer-Fröhlich winery wasn’t founded until the 1970s, when the two families joined forces through marriage, then gradually built one of the most renowned wineries not just in the Nahe region but in the whole of Germany. The man behind all of that was TIm Frohlich, who produced his first vintage in 1995 at the age of 21 and remains in charge today. Today the winery farms more than 50 acres, including some of the top-rate vineyards in the region, 85% of which are planted to Riesling with the remainder given over to Pinot varietals. This is the winery’s entry-level Riesling, full of spice, green apple, and minerals, with laser-focused acidity.
