The historic Karthäuserhof estate is found just before the confluence of the Ruwer and Mosel rivers, nestled along a side valley adjacent to the small village of Eitelsbach. While winemaking here dates back to Roman times, most consider the “official” founding of the estate as we know it to be 1335, when Balduin, the Archbishop and Elector of Trier, gave the vineyards to the Carthusians monks, calling it the “Farm of the Carthusians,” or Karthäuserhof in German. (The BRUNO wines are named for Bruno of Cologne, the founder of the Carthusian order.) Valentin Loenardy bought the property at auction in 1811, and it remained in the same direct line until 2012, when Leonardy’s grandson, Christoph Tyrell, turned it over to his cousin Albert Behler. For many years Karthäuserhof operated as a single-vineyard Ruher estate making wine entirely from their own 47-acre vineyard, but in recent times other vineayrds have been added, making for a total of 69 acres planted almost entirely to Riesling (there is a small amount of Pinot Blanc). This Kabinett Feinherb is delicately aromatic, harmonious and balanced, featuring a delightful interplay of sweetness and acidity.
