Right after the end of the war, in 1945, Giovanni Brannetti bought a plot of land in the Roman countryside and, with his wife Ida, began working a vineyard there. The venture continued with the involvement of youngest son Giuseppe, both father and son devoted to making wine without the use of any chemical fertilizers or herbicides. In time Giuseppe and his wife Daniela bought a vineyard in the Appia Antica Park, where they founded Riserva della Cascina. Since 2011 they have been joined by their eldest daughter Silvia, and the entire operation has been certified organic since 1994. This wine is named for the location of the winery, IX Miglio, Mile 9 on the Appian Way; a blend of three local grapes, Malvasia Puntinata, Trebbiano Toscano, and Malvasia Rossa, it is a very close approximation of the white wine the ancient Romans drank, which they called Albanum. It has an elegant bouquet with hints of citrus and white flowers and is soft and fresh on the palate.
