Loxarel is the brand name for the wines made by Masia Can Mayol, a medium-sized organic winery located an hour southwest of Barcelona. It’s run by Josep Mitjans, the fourth generation of his family to make wine here. They produce a range of wines, from cheap and cheerful to obscure grape varieties made in amphorae, always organic and often biodynamic, including a range of sparkling wines. This Amaltea, named after Zeus’s nurse, happily falls into the “cheap and cheerful” category; a blend of Cabernet, Tempranillo and Merlot that spends ten months in Hungarian oak, it is bright, fresh, and extremely easy to drink.
