Alvaro Palacios is unquestionably one of the defining figures in Spanish winemaking in our time, having over the past 25 years established a formidable reputation as a dynamic pioneer, generating global praise for his wines – in particular, those from the forgotten regions of Spain he has been so active in promoting. Most will immediately associate his name with the region of Priorat, in northeastern Spain, but his early travels to the region of Bierzo left him firmly convinced of the potential of that region. And so, in 1998, he joined forces with his nephew, Ricardo Perez Palacios, to found a winery in the western reaches of Bierzo, naming it for Alvaro’s father(and Ricardo’s grandfather). “Petalos” is their entry-level wine, a blend of grapes from many different vineyards planted with field blends (but dominated by Mencia). Hailed as the latest triumph from Alvaro Palacios, this is an intense red with lots of herbs and spices, fine tannins, and an underlying minerality.
