Brothers Fernand and Gaston Chiquet created the Champagne house Chiquet Brothers back in 1919. The pair were pioneers in the region: according to the winery, they were the very first winemakers to keep their own grapes and to vinify them into wines that they would sell, as opposed to selling them off to the famous houses. In 1935 Gaston separated from his brother to create his own brand; the enterprise remains in the family, today being run by Gaston’s grandsons, Antoine and Nicolas. . In 1971 a group of twelve growers started an organization called Club de Viticultures Champenois, to promote the concept of terroir and estate bottled, or grower Champagne in France and abroad. In 1999 the group changed their name to Club Trésors de Champagne, but the mission and philosophy has not changed. The standards that the group adopted are so demanding that there are currently only about two dozen members out of the approximately 5000 growers in the appellation. This Gaston Chiquet entry is a 68/32 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; with a fine nose that is elegant and floral, the wine is fresh and balanced on the palate with hazelnut and quince on the long finish.
