PortoVino is a national importer of small family wineries in italy, Germany and Austria. It was started nearly two decades ago by Ernest Ifkowitz, who was originally from the United States but is now based, with his family, in Florence. The FUSO Collection is Ifkowitz's project involving searching out and bottling natural wines from farmers he has come to know throughout Italy, working with them to choose specific vineyards and providing on-site advice on fermentation, élevage, sample tasting, and eventual bottling. This Sicillian red comes from Ifkowitz's friend Dario Serrentino, who farms his vines in the Val di Noto, in the southeastern part of the island. Mostly Nero d'Avola that has been co-fermented with a small amount of a white grape, Grillo, the wwine is done done in stainless steel and bottled unfined; it is ripe and juicy, a bit musky, with compelling acidity.
