The Nahe River flows north into the Rhine at Bingen at the western end of the Rheingau. The best wines from the Nahe have been described as having the elegance of the Rheingau, the body of a Rheinhessen, and the acidity of a Mosel. There are several outstanding producers here, but the most notable is perhaps Helmut Donnhoff, who produces some of Germany’s finest Rieslings from ten differnet Grand Cru vineyard sites. “Tonschiefer” is sourced mostly from the Oberhauser Leisttenberg site, a steep southeast-facing vineyard where the soil is based largely on slate (“tonschiefer” being the German word for decomposed slate). Made from organically grown grapes, this is a fine elegant Riesling with delicate peach and citrus aromas and a long, ripe yet crisp finish.
