Pier Luigi Tolaini, a native of Tuscany, immigrated to Canada in 1956. He planned to work for a few years, make some money, then go back home, buy a farm, marry his high school sweetheart and make some good wine. It took him 45 years, but eventually he did it, making the return trip in 1998. Today the Tolaini estate, in the Castelnuovo Berardenga part of the Chianti Classico region, ranks as the source of some of the best wines from here. The estate is now in the hands of Lia Tolaini Banville, Pier Luigi's daughter, who in 2004 launched her own line of wines, Donna laura, named in tribute to her aunt. Her Rosso Toscana "Ali" is 90% Sangiovese with the rest Cabernet Sauvignon for added structure; it shows juicy red fruit on the nose and the palate along with savory notes of dried herbs, earth, and pencil shavings.
