What we know of as Chateau Prieure Lichine today started out as a priory for Benedictine monks. Like many estates during the French Revolution, the estate was seized, split up and sold at auction. Fast-forward to 1991, when the noted author and wine merchant Alexis Lichine put together a group to purchase the chateau along with other vineyards in Margaux. By the time they arrived in the Medoc to buy Chateau Prieure, due to neglect and a lack of finances, the vineyard was down to only 28 planted acres. Because everything about the estate was in bad condition, so it was onward and upward from that point on. After Lichine’s death in 1989 the estate was managed for several years by his son Sacha, then sold to Groupe Ballande, a successful Bordeaux negociant, in 1999 for close to twenty million British pounds. “Confidences” is the estate’s second wine, a Merlot-dominant blend that, as illustrated here, consistently favors roundness and a silky touch on the palate. This is a concentrated Margaux with ripe, full fruit and intense acidity.
