Clos Fourtet began life as a defensive fort in the Middle Ages. Its modern era began in 1919 when it was acquired by Fernand Ginestet of the powerful family that then owned several vineyards and were successful negociants; the family sold Clos Fourtet in 1949 in order to raise money for the purchase of Chateau Margaux. Today it is owned by the Cuvelier family who also own Chateau Poujeaux in Moulis as well as three other estates in St. Emilion. Clos Fourtet is an exciting Bordeaux wine. Located just outside the village of St. Emilion, over a series of deep, limestone caves, this estate produces, as exemplified here, mineral-driven, dark-berried, fresh, ripe, opulent, flamboyant wines that offer intense, pure flavors, rich textures and spicy aromatics with hints of licorice.
