This estate in Saint Julien has a long, complicated history that dates from 1638, but its modern age begins in 1920 when it was acquired by the Cuvelier family from the Lalande family. In 1979 Didier Cuvelier, aged 26, took charge, the first member of the family to do so, and it was he who brought Emile Peynaud into the fold; together they instituted a number of important changes, including modernizing the winemaking facilities and replanting the vineyards. Didier Cuvelier retired following the 2017 vintage, and the estate is now run by his niece Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. The vineyards here are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a roughly two to one proportion, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and the house style generally tends toward the plush and powerful, with lots of lush ripe fruit, characteristics that are very much on display in this 2020 vintage, a bottling that celebrates the Cuvelier’s hundred years of ownership. This is a silky and opulently textured Bordeaux, with layers of fruit and a seamless, silky finish.
