Chateau Olivier is in contention for one of the oldest properties in Bordeaux, as Bordeaux wine historians believe the estate dates back as far as the 11th century. It is one of the few true castles in the region, even boasting a moat and a drawbridge. In its modern incarnation, Olivier was purchased in 1867 by the then mayor of Bordeaux, Alexandre de Bethmann, whose family had ancestral roots in Germany and owned a very large banking operation. Olivier remains in that family today, and in 1953 the chateau, its outbuildings, moat and fountains were all classified as historic monuments. The red-grape vineyards (Olivier also produces a white Bordeaux) are planted to 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, with the vines being, on average, close to 25 years of age. This 2009 is medium-bodied, with aromas of wood, red pepper, flowers and red fruits with some dryness in the tannins.
