While many Bordeaux chateaux have long histories in the region, especially in the Medoc, that is not the case with Chateau Gloria. In fact, it’s a relatively new estate compared to its peers, having been created only in 1942 when Henri Martin purchased fifteen acres of vines from Chateau Beychevelle. Over the years Martin acquired more vineyard land, eventually cobbling together a total of 120 acres. Gloria is planted to a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot; it generally produces a lighter styled-St. Julien that is ready to drink within a few years after release. This 2020 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc; highly rated by all the major critics, it is poised and elegant, medium-bodied, with silky tannins and layers of fresh black fruit.
