Located at 684 Broadway, just east of Washington Square, Great Jones Distillery is the first legal distillery to operate in Manhattan since Prohibition. Founded by Juan Domingo Beckmann, the CEO of Jose Cuervo, and opened for business only in late summer of 2021, the distillery is much more than a still and some tall tanks; it is the cornerstone of a four-story dining/drinking/entertainment complex. And their rye? Made from 100% rye grown in the "black dirt" region of upstate New York and aged in new charred American oak, it shows sweett herbs and honey on the nose, and the palate is pleasantly weighty, with rich notes of cocoa, vanilla, and brown bread balanced by earthy spices.
