Michter’s Distillery, originally known as Bomberger’s Distillery, may at the time of its closing in 1989, have been the oldest distillery in the United States. The complex, located near Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, dates from about 1840 and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1980. It closed in 1989 after a bankruptcy filing, but since 2004 whiskeys produced in Bardstown Kentucky by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers have been sold under the Michter’s label. This barrel-strength rye, first released in May 2016, is bottled at its particular alcohol level at the time of bottling; rich, smooth, and full-bodied, this is a unique experience for anyone who enjoys rye whiskey.
