Onetime film and TV producer Daniel de la Nuez got interested in distilling a few years ago, inspired by a friend of his, Aaron Fox, who was already “doing it himself.” De la Nuez launched his project, Forthave, in January of 2017 in the Pfizer building on the border between Bed-Stuy and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Starting with three spirits− Red, an aperitivo, an amaro called Marseilles, and Blue, an American dry gin – he has since added several more items, including this new amaro. The second in a series of limited releases from Forthave, Mithradates is based on an ancient medicinal recipe: starting with a base of red wine from the Finger Lakes to which 34 local and unique botanicals have been added, the mixture is then rested for a time in a combination of used bourbon barrels and steel tanks. The result s an amaro with just the right amount of bitter and a light and pleasant weight on the palate.
