Since the late 1880s, over decades and sometimes skipping generations, the Amadeo family has been creating amari and liqueurs, first in their ancestral home on the Amalfi Coast and now, in the person of Francesco Amadeo, in Washington, D.C. Amadeo opened his distillery in D.C. in 2012, naming it in honor of his grandfather. Ferro-Kina was an aperitivo/amaro invented in 1881, but Francesco's grandfather, Giovani Porpora, created his own recipe for it in 1967. Francesco produces it today following traditional methods, macerating a proprietary botanical blend in terracotta amphoras. The tonico highlights aromas of bitter lemon, china calisaya, gentian lutea and iron citrate.
