Yann Bertrand is unquestionably one of the brightest young stars in the Beaujolais firmament. In spite of being born and raised in Fleurie he initially had no interest in winemaking. But spending a few years traveling in the French Alps, working in wine bars and retail shops, gave him a whole new perspective. He returned to the Beaujolais, began working with his parents, and shortly took over the small domaine, which comprises some 13 acres in Fleuirie and some small plots in Morgon. A local retired vigneron was greatly impressed with Yann’s efforts, saying that they reminded him of the wines that he drank when he was a young winemaker, and offered to rent Yann the “Oh!” parcel, which lies just across the path from Fleurie designated vineyards. The vines are on average sixty years old and the wine is made using semi-carbonic fermentation, with aging done two-thirds in concrete tanks and one third in large neutral barrels. Complex yet easy-drinking, it has aromas and flavors of white pepper, crushed berried, and dried flowers.
