The Coteaux du Giennois may be the tiniest appellation in the central Loire, but Clement and Florian Berthier could not be more enthusiastic about the potential of the area for making great wine. Their vines are planted on slopes on the opposite side of the Loire from Sancerre, and the vines range in age from 35 to 100 years old. Theirs is very much a family story: the winegrower profession here has been handed down from father to son for five generations. Clement and Florian took over the reins here in 2012. This red is an 85/15 blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay; with dark fruit and hints of spice on the nose, it is fresh on the palate, with a velvety texture and an uplifting touch of spice on the finish.
