Chris and Kathleen Whitcraft started their winery in 1985, making the Whitcraft family longstanding members of the Santa Barbara winemaking community. Chris had hosted a local wine radio program in Santa Barbara County for more than ten years and learned his craft from some of the best winemakers in California, including Joe Heitz, Dick Graff, and Burt Williams. Chris passed in 2014, but son Drake, who had taken over in 2007, continues to carry on the tradition of excellent winemaking within the Whitcraft family. As did his father before him, Drake sources his grapes from top growers in and around Santa Barbara County, primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Grenache. This Pinot, from a vineyard right next to Sanford & Benedict in the Santa Rita Hills, offers a wealth of herbs and spices on the nose and palate, along with wild-berry fruits and a youthful kick of acidity.
