The Eyzaguirre family left their home in the Basque country of Spain in the mid-seventeenth century, emigrating to Chile where they did indeed prosper. Domingo Eyzaguirre, representing the second generation in the country, planted some of the first vines from French rootstock in that region and founded the Vino de Eyzaguirre near a village built by monks from a nearby Franciscan monastery. It was those monks who came up with the idea for the burlap wrapping to protect the bottles of wine. Still known affectionately as "the wine in the burlap sack," the Eyzaguirre Cab remains an exceptional value. Its aromatic profile features fresh and dried cherry plus dried plum, with intriguing notes of dark chocolate and mint. On the palate the wine is rich, well balanced and approachable, with a long, smooth finish.
