Fred Cline, founder of Sonoma's Cline Cellars, started his winemaking career in Oakley, in California's Contra Costa County, east of San Francisco Bay along the Sacramento River, where he had grown nuts and grapes before eventually settling on winemaking. Brother Matt pitched in to help, becoming winemaker and creative director in 1985, and in 1991 they moved his winery to Carneros. A few years ago, wanting to make his own mark, Matt left Cline Cellars and started his own brand, Trinitas, which he sold in 2006 and then started Three Wines. Matt and his family continue to live in Sonoma but his winemaking interest has shifted back to his home ground and the new winery and tasting room are located in, guess where, Clarksburg in the Sacramento Delta. This is old-vines Zinfandel from Contra Costa County, with a healthy hit of Petite Syrah and small amounts of Carignan and Mataro blended in; there is a concentration of ripe blackberries and spice with a minerality (dusty berry) sneaking through, a firm tannic backbone from the Petite Syrah, while the Carignane adds a pronounced fleshy mouth feel and the Mataro adds spice elements.
