Charles Smith has long been known as the great maverick winemaker of the Pacific Northwest. He burst onto the US wine scene in 2004 with the “House Wine” line of wines, which he sold two years later to Precept Wines; subsequent efforts include K Vintners, the Magnificent Wine Company, Charles Smith Wines, and now House of Smith, producer of the Substance line of wines. For this Pinot Smith sourced grapes from two Washington vineyards, Golden West, a newly planted high-elevation vineyard overlooking the Columbia River, and Evergreen, planted in 1998 by Jerry Millbrandt along a stretch of steep cliffs above the river. From one of the warmest vintages to date in the state, this is a Pinot with sour cherries, strawberries, and an herbal edge; medium-bodied on the palate, it is juicy, crunchy and concise, with lots of fruit at the end.
