Vincenco Spinelli founded this Abruzzo winery some fifty years ago; it remains today a family enterprise, run by Vincenzo’s two sons, Carlo and Adriano. The winery is on the southern edge of Abruzoo, nestled between the Frentane hills and the Sangro River, where grape-growing and winemaking are centuries-old traditions. Their 200 acres are planted to ten different varietals, a mix of red and white, but pride of place perhaps belongs to the native red varietal, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. The Spinelli version, done in stainless steel with 10% Sangiovese blended in, is a bright, soft red with generous aromas of red fruit and spices, with good strcture, balance, and length.
