Samuel Louis Smith, a young winemaker out of California’s Central Coast region, has been called “a winemaker to watch.” Until recently he had been head winemaker at Morgan Winery, but now devotes his energies full time to his own label, which he started in 2014 as a side project. Smith styles himself as a “micro-negoce,” sourcing his grapes from high-altitude vineyard sites throughout the Central coast. Sam is partial to whole-cluster fermentation, believing it makes for the purest possible expression of the grape. This Syrah is a blend of fruit from two vineyards, the Nelson Vineyard and the Gali Vineyard, both in the Santa Cruz Mountains designation; decidedly zesty, it has fresh fruit aromas that lead into a texturally complex palate of refreshing tart fruit.
