This iconic California winery was founded by Jim and Carolyn Pride in 1990; it is located on the site of the historic Summit Ranch at the crest of the Mayacamas Mountains, with the Napa/Sonoma County line running right down the middle of the property. Jim Pride died of cancer in 2004, but the winery continues as a family operation, Jim having sold it to his children, Steve and Suzanne, prior to his passing. Winemaker Sally Johnson has been at the helm here since 2007. Her Syrah, with a small touch of Grenache blended in, has been called one of the diamonds hiding behind Pride’s name. Sourced from stellar Sonoma County sites and two tiny parcels at the estate, this is a dark-fruited Syrah that combines Pride’s trademark intensity and concentration with the kind of spice and savoriness commonly found in the top wines of the northern Rhône.
