Samuel Louis Smith, a young winemaker out of California’s Central Coast region, has been called “a winemaker to watch.” Until recently he had been head winemaker at Morgan Winery, but now devotes his energies full time to his own label, which he started in 2014 as a side project. Smith styles himself as a “micro-negoce,” sourcing his grapes from high-altitude vineyard sites throughout the Central coast. Sam is partial to whole-cluster fermentation, believing it makes for the purest possible expression of the grape. His Gamay from the Escolle Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands says “Fleurie” and “Morgon” with the first sip, and has been praised as “a promising sign for this variety in this appellation.” With aromas of plums, currants. And bay leaf, it offers zesty acidity and a grippy texture, with flavors of fresh purple-fruit flavors on the palate.
