The web site says “Call us Ruge,” because that was the childhood nicknake for the Ruggeri brothers. In fact, in Valdobiaddene the surname Ruggeri is closely linked to the history of prosecco. From Agostino Ruggeri, the progenitor, continuing a short genealogical line we reach Vittore and his two sons, Ruggero and Andrea, the current winemakers here. The estate is located on the Col Funer, in Santo Stefano, one of the most suitable, sunny and suggestive areas of the entire Valdobbiadene DOCG territory. Ruge produces six different styles of prosecco, four of which are produced using the Martinotti method, the other two (including this L’Essenziale) made refermented in the bottle, Champagne-style. (Locally these wines are also described as “col fondon,” meaning with the lees.) Rich and full on the palate, L’Essenziane is considered a connoisseur’s delight, the perfect choice of you want to taste “the real thing.”
