One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard. Noval is mentioned in land registries going back to 1715, and has been sold just twice since then, once in the late 19th century and to its present owners, the French-based wine-growing group AXA Millesimes, in 1993. Noval Black Reserve is offered as a “new-age port,” no ageing and no decanting required. In making it, half of the grapes are trodden by foot and fermented in the open troughs called “lagares”; the other half is vinified by pumping over in controlled-temperature stainless steel vats. The result is a readily drinkable port with great freshness and balance and a soft, accommodating texture.
