Smith Woodhouse was founded in 1784 when Christopher Smith, Lord Mayor of London, created a small company to ship Port from the Douro valley. Shortly after, he was joined by the Woodhouse brothers. The amalgamation of the Smith and Woodhouse families over 200 years ago gave this highly reputable company its name. Over the years, Smith Woodhouse has consistently been judged one of the finest Port producers; their wines are made primarily from grapes grown in the vineyards of Quinta da Madalena, a small but very good property in the heart of the Douro. Since 1970 the house has been under the ownership of the Symington family. Their Late Bottled Vintage Port is produced in the traditional style, from the finest Ports of a single very good year. “Traditional” means that after four years of cask ageing, the wines are bottled unfiltered and cellared, for at least an additional four years, before being released for sale. It is this bottle ageing that allows the wine to develop outstanding style and complexity, resulting in a deep colored Port with rich mouth-filling flavors of ripe fruit balanced by notes of black chocolate and peppery tannins.
