Pol Roger started his career in the wine business in 1849, turning his talents to the production of Champagne in 1855, favoring brut because he knew it was the style the British preferred. By the time of Roger’s death in 1899, the brand had already established a serious reputation. Today, six generations on, the house remains with the founding family, with the appointment of Christian Pol-Roger to the Board of Directors in 2008. And the wine’s rapport with the British palate continued into the 20th Century, when Pol Roger became Winston Churchill’s facorite Champagne: Churchill named one of his race horses Pol Roger, and the house in turn named the top of their line after the statesman. Pinot Noir predominates in this cuvee, providing structure, breadth and robustness, while Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Crus vineyards which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime, this cuvée is made only in the very best vintages and is always released later than the other vintage-dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, a nod to Churchill's appreciation for older wines.
