Established in 1844, just eight years after the foundation of South Australia, Penfolds remains today the megastar of the Australian wine scene. Dr. Penfold’s stone house still stands on his original property just outside Adelaide, but the winery, long the anchor of behemoth Southcorp, is now located in the Barossa Valley. The “Koonunga Hill” line is considered the gateway to the Penfolds collection of wines and are known, without exception, for their richness, balance, and flavorful palate. The Shiraz in particular, reflects Penfolds’ multiregional sourcing philosophy, with Shiraz from the warmer growing districts of South Australia blended with those from the temperate Barossa clime. This is a well-structure red with rich Shiraz fruit flavors layered with a touch of pepper and spice.
