Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery; it was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston in the Barossa Valley seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around.” Five generations later the winery has grown in size and stature and continues to be an iconic producer in the region. “The Signature” was created with the 1962 vintage, released in 1966, and has since then stood as a representation of what the family stands for, a representation of their history and ethos. Always, as here, a blend of Cabernet and Shiraz, this is a seductive red with aromas of red licorice and dark cherry, refined and balanced on the palate, very elegant, a wine of great balance, style and defined fruit characteristics with a long, lingering tannin profile.
