Established in 1844, just eight years after the foundation of South Australia, Penfolds remains today the megastar of the Australian wine scene. Dr. Penfold’s stone house still stands on his original property just outside Adelaide, but the winery, long the anchor of behemoth Southcorp, is now located in the Barossa Valley. Penfolds started the use of bin numbers, a reference to the area in the cellar where the wine has been stored, on its labels when Max Schubert, the Chief Winemaker, crafted the very first vintage of Penfolds Grange Hermitage in 1951. Around 1959, the winemaking team created a Shiraz using the grapes sourced from their own Barossa Valley vineyards and named it Bin 28, after the storage area of the wine cellar. Subsequently, Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz became the first official Penfolds Bin number wine, soon joined by others, including this Bin 389. Often referred to as “Baby Grange” because components of the wine are made in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange, this blend was first made in 1960 by Schubert; today, just as sixty years ago, it combines the tructure of Cabernet with the richness of Shiraz.
