Having made a resounding success of Tenuta di Trinoro in southern Tuscany, and looking for new wine worlds to explore, Andrea Fraschetti in 2000 turned his eyes toward Sicily. He found some abandoned vineyards on the northern side of Mount Etna with the unique characteristics of high-elevation terraces of highly varied black lava soils and with still viable vines of Carricante and Nerello Mascalese, some going back to before 1900. Having already established himself as a bit of an iconoclast by going with Cabernet Franc at Trinoro, Feaschetti added to that reputation by being one of the pioneers in reestablishing commercial viticulture on Etna. His Scinniri is yet another bit of mind-bending winemaking, a thoroughly unlikely blend of Nerello Mascalese, Cesanese, and Petit Verdot. Fermented in stainless steel and aged ten months in large oak barrels, it is full of smoky, herbal flavors that seamlessly balance out the juicy fruit.
