Mongarda is a small, family-owned, nature-oriented producer of Prosecco, begun in 1978 by Bruno Tormena and today run by his son Martino, who has been in charge since 2011. Mongarda has a little more than thirty acres of vines spread among four villages, all in the heart of the Valdobbiadene, Conegliano Prosecco Superiore zone, mostly old vines growing in poor, rocky soils on extreme slopes. Which means they have to be worked manually. The main variety is, of course, Glera, but the Tormena family has also kept several local heirloomvarietals which are interspersed through the parcels and co-harvested and co-fermented with the Glera. This Prosecco Superiore Brut is 90% Glera, the rest Verdiso and Bianchetta from a single vineyard planted in 1950; with aromas of spring flowers and white stone fruit, it is dry and savory, with bright acidity and refined bubbles.
