Louis-Napoleon Mattei created his aperitif wine in 1872, naming it after his native region, the peninsula that forms the northeaster point of Corsica, jutting into the Mediterranean. Mattei discovered the beneficial properties of cinchona tree bark during a voyage to the Caribbean and brought it to Cap Corse to blend with local wine made from Muscat and Vermentinu grapes, adding spices as well as Cedrat (citron), a thick-peeled ancestor of lemon. Cap Corse Mattei Quinquina was soon exported across the globe. It remains today family-owned, and all macerations, ageing and bottling are done in house. The Blanc is the original version, as described above; it has great minerality, acidity, and floral tones, all balanced with quinine bitterness.
